Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus has a membership of 150. Keep an eye on our social accounts for when our next New Members Evening will be held. Unlike other groups, we don’t audition.
Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus is the biggest gay men’s chorus in UK outside of London. We’ve grown a lot in the last couple of years and now have 150 members. Right now we’re not accepting new members while we get used to our increased amplitude. We recommend following our social accounts (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) as the next New Members Evening will be announced there first. We don‘t hold auditions. We meet weekly on a Tuesday night in our beautiful rehearsal space located in the centre of Brighton, and we end the evening with a well-deserved drink in our local pub.

You may have sung in a choir or group in the past, or you may be unsure if you even ‘have a voice’. Singing comes more naturally when you are surrounded by other voices and getting some encouragement, and that’s what we try to provide.
The best way to start singing is to tune out all the internalised messages that say you can’t… so come along and see that you can!
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never sung before, or if you can’t read music, as neither of these things are essential. In fact, roughly half of us have never been choirboys and can’t read music.
We don’t use music scores or song sheets in performances, so we all have to learn things by heart. We make use of online resources as a learning aid to use in our own time, so nobody gets left behind.
We sing mainly in 4-part harmony:
- First Tenor
- Second Tenor
- Baritone
- Bass
We’ll help you settle into the Chorus and make sure you are in the right section for your vocal range. Our Artistic Director will voice test you to assist – but don’t worry, it’s not a formal audition
We rehearse from 7.45-10.15 pm every Tuesday evening in our beautiful rehearsal space located in the centre of Brighton. Once a month we have a longer afternoon session on a Saturday or Sunday. There are some additional rehearsals before our main performances, and the four voice parts each meet for “sectional” rehearsals a couple of times per season. Members who are planning on performing are expected to attend most rehearsals. There’s always a tea or lunch break and many members enjoy going to the pub afterwards.
If you decide to sign up as a member, you will need to pay a monthly subscription fee, which is currently £31 (or £15.50 for those on a low income). This covers the cost of hiring the rehearsal space, paying our music professionals, printing of scores, tuition, tea and biscuits. Unlike some amateur societies we don’t charge to perform in our end of season shows, and there is never any pressure for you to perform at all.
